The story of the palazzo begins with Charles Collett and Mark Farmer, two architects whose love for Umbria and Tuscany has spanned over two decades. Their journey toward this historic gem began with a shared dream—to one day create a hideaway where history and hospitality intertwine. That dream first took root during a stay at a country house hotel in Umbria, 2003. Over candlelit dinners and conversations about architecture and design, the seed of an ambition was planted: to one day bring a townhouse palazzo to life.

Fast forward to 2019, and the pair was scouring the Tuscan countryside and towns for a property that could fulfil their vision. After countless viewings and moments of near despair, fate intervened. While touring Cortona’s picturesque piazza with their local agent Lorenzo, Mark—exasperated yet hopeful—described their ideal find: “An authentic medieval hall with a big fireplace.”

As if the universe was listening, Lorenzo made a call to Maria, the owner of a property not yet on the market but steeped in history and charm. Within moments of stepping into Palazzo Passerini, Mark and Charles knew they had found their place. “This is it,” Mark whispered, even before the full property had been explored. It was a moment of instinct, where the past and future seemed to converge.

Passerini’s restoration was a labour of love, driven by Charles and Mark’s architectural expertise and reverence for the building’s legacy.
