Nestled amidst the sun-drenched olive groves and flourishing vineyards of Ciociaria, Al Piglio Maison de Charme embodies a perfect marriage between rustic elegance and authentic Italian charm. This boutique hotel, born from a family’s love for nature and heritage, is more than a retreat; it is an immersive journey into the heart of the Italian countryside.
Elisabetta, co-owner of Al Piglio, describes the genesis of the hotel with a quote by T.S. Eliot: “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.” After years of travelling the globe, Elisabetta returned to her homeland with renewed appreciation for its untapped potential. “Coming back to Ciociaria with different eyes made me see its beauty in a whole new way,” she shares.
The idea to create not just a hotel but a bespoke sanctuary was born from this revelation. Together with her husband Giovanni, a wine producer with roots in Piedmont, the couple envisioned a space that would offer more than accommodation—a place where guests could reconnect with nature, indulge in authentic Italian experiences, and savour the joy of slow living.
The property itself is a lovingly restored farmhouse, where every architectural decision was guided by Mediterranean inspiration. White lime walls kissed by the Italian sun stand in striking contrast to dark red shutters, reminiscent of the region’s rich Cesanese wines. The interiors feature exposed wooden beams, natural hues, and carefully chosen pieces from Elisabetta’s travels—an Indian bed here, a Vietnamese table there, and Andean carpets adding texture and warmth.
Bathrooms are adorned with intricately decorated majolica tiles, echoing the crimson tones of the vineyards. The outdoor spaces are equally enchanting, with wicker furnishings nestled among terracotta vases brimming with aromatic herbs, roses, and citrus trees.
The heartbeat of Al Piglio is undoubtedly the family behind it. Elisabetta, Giovanni, their spirited 12-year-old son Jan, and their beloved dog Biscotto create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and welcoming.
“We don’t just run a hotel,” Elisabetta notes, “we share our way of life.”
Guests quickly become part of this extended family, experiencing the warmth and authenticity that defines Italian hospitality.
Giovanni’s passion for winemaking is palpable. His original Langhe winery, Serradenari, already exports Barolo to 37 countries around the world and has been selected by CNN and Stanely Tucci as a location for “Searching for Italy”, the episode dedicated to Piedmont’s food and wine.
Already a producer in the famed Barolo region, he has embraced the challenge of crafting exceptional Cesanese wines at Al Piglio. “We refuse to compromise on quality,” he asserts. From the vineyard to the olive groves, every element of production reflects their dedication to excellence.
Respect for the environment is central to the hotel’s philosophy. The property is powered by a photovoltaic system, and single-use plastics are strictly avoided. The Terra Restaurant champions local produce, crafting seasonal dishes that celebrate the region’s culinary heritage.
Future plans include the development of a wellness area, featuring an indoor saltwater swimming pool overlooking the verdant valley. Elisabetta’s vision for “agri-wellness” seamlessly blends natural therapies with the restorative power of the landscape. Guests often find themselves drawn to a particular spot on the property: the stone circle beneath the majestic oak tree.
“It’s a place where nature reveals its beauty in every season,” Elisabetta muses. “Your gaze becomes suspended in the moment.”
This ethos of mindfulness extends to every aspect of the guest experience. “Our aim is for visitors to leave not just saying they slept or ate well, but that they truly had a wonderful time,” Giovanni explains.
Al Piglio Maison de Charme stands as a testament to the family’s passion for hospitality, nature, and the land they call home. It offers an experience that lingers long after departure—a place where guests are not merely visitors but cherished friends.
Whether savouring a glass of Giovanni’s finest Cesanese, dining on seasonal delicacies, or simply sitting beneath the oak tree, Al Piglio invites you to pause, breathe, and rediscover the simple joys of life.
