First thing that comes to mind in terms of traditional Swiss music is yodelling, then Alphorn and Landler music. If the former is based entirely on human-produced sounds, the others rely heavily on instruments such as the alpine horn, clarinet, bass or piano. For more commercial tunes, contemporary Swiss musicians include world-famous house and dance artists, such as DJ Antoine or Yves Larock with his mega-hit "Rise up". Then, going back to our childhood stories, who hasn’t heard of 'Town Musicians of Bremen'?

Smells

It is difficult to imagine a more enchanting aroma than chocolate and you certainly find an abundance of it in Switzerland that we can go as far as saying that it is the national odour. Next comes cheese, but this is a tricky one, as you might find the particular aromas not to your liking. Food aside, nothing beats the fresh smell of grass, of pine and chestnut trees, the smell of living nature, of adventure. Breathe in!

Tastes

Eclectic and flavoursome, Swiss food is a mix of influences from Italian, French and German cuisine. Governed by cheese, either Emmental, Gruyere or Vachrein, and potatoes, the most common local dishes you should not miss are fondue, rosti and raclette. From the Italian pasta and pizza to various types of tarts and quiches, Switzerland will never let you leave with an empty stomach; there is something for everyone. Remember to stay hydrated: you can fill your cup with rivella, a milk-based soft drink, for a start and then, if you’re not driving, try the local wines and some strong absinthe from its birthplace in the Jura region.
